He looks ready to play right now and we have some space open to give him the chance. I have heard Alex Okafor is looking good but I'm not generally all that excited about linemen (defensive or offensive) coming in and making waves as true freshmen. Running backs, on the other hand, tend to be ready - and Chris Whaley might have a whale of an impact. I don't see any other freshmen doing much. *There is only one TRUTH and its name is OBAMA*

Some people are like Slinkies, they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

He might eventually make it as a tackle or playing the tuba in the LHB, but you can scratch him as an impact runner - thanks a million Atilla. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Garrett Gilbert will shock everyone at how fast he picks up the offense and is ready to make a contribution....

Not starting Cedric cost him a lot of ire from the Longhorn faithful after a series of OU losses. Then he started him the rest of the season and Ced did fine. Mack remembers. If Whaley comes in and looks good, look for his role to grow as the season progresses. Let him 'rip it up' against Wyoming and the likes, and the kid may unseat the running back by committee approach Mack has taken the last few years. Secondly, Whaley's high school stats are impressive. If the kid can be anywhere near as good in college, he will take the starting job. peace Beware of what you wish on others. Okafor, hands down. To make a meaningful contribution as a true freshman two things are necessary. 1. Talent. 2. A chance to play. Okafor is reputed to be the most talented DE to show up in the MB era, so the skills are there . If Eddie Jones is unable to play, then there's a clear opportunity for him to crack the 2 deep. Okafor was also on campus in the Spring, so he's ahead of any other true F. who was not. #2. Will be either Derek Johnson or Howell, mainly because DT depth is thin, and one of these 2 will get a shot at the 2 deep. # 3 Impact player could be Marcus Davis. He was also on campus in the Spring, which helps a lot. Whaley will be buried in the depth chart behind Cody, Vondrell and Fozzy. Frankly, I seriously doubt that Mack is going to trust him to protect Colt. He'll play, but probably on some red zone runs where protecting Colt is not a factor.

I can see a DC like we've got putting him in early and often and saying "sic 'em." Whaley will either come in and be the hit of early camp, or he'll decide that he's just happy to be in Austin. Do we have a healthy Edwin Simmons or the second coming of Ivan Williams? The answer is all attitude. We shall see. Howell is my pick to see real time at DT. We need me to be right about that. "I never had an opinion I didn't like."
